Earth Day Rainmakers

I have been working on an Earth Day (Mon Apr 22) craft idea that both my little guys can help make and enjoy using.  Rainmakers seemed like a safe bet:)
I used paper towel tubes, and covered them in construction paper (easier than painting).  I then made end caps by cutting out a circle and cutting slits around the edge so it could fit on the end of the tube.
I attached one end cap with tape, and then put a crinkled up piece of aluminum foil inside the tube.
The next step was a bit messy because I let the kids do it (it is a kids craft after all, right???).  We did it outside for easier cleanup.  I put out a few bowls with different noise maker items - lentils, coffee beans, and rice.  I let the kids put what they wanted into their rainmaker, and then sealed it up.  They then put stickers and feathers on the outside of the tube.  In hindsight I realize it may have been easier to have them decorate the paper before attaching it to the paper towel tube, because the tube is not that sturdy, but it still worked to leave it until the end.
The finished product was pretty cute, and makes a great sound.  I have been looking into DIY instruments, so I'll save this one for the orchestra:)
