Paint with Potatoes for National Potato Day!

Did you know today was National Potato Day?  There really is a day for everything:)

Celebrate all of the wonderful things you love about potatoes with a quick and easy project - potato paintings!  You don't paint the potatoes, you use them to paint a masterpiece.  You can just cut them in half, or if you feel really creative you can carve out shapes and use them like stamps.  Go crazy!  Love the potato!

This example is fro firstpalette.com

Materials

  • Potatoes
  • Knife
  • Chopping board
  • Paint
  • Shallow plates
  • Sketch paper or fabric

Steps

Step 1 Potato Stamps1.Clean the potatoes first. Wash and towel dry.
Step 2a Potato StampsAsk for an adult's help2.Cut the potato into desired shape.

a.) One method is to cut the potato in half and carve out the shape at the bottom.

You can even make a handle by carving out the top of the potato stamp (refer to bottom photo).
Step 2b Potato StampsAsk for an adult's helpb.) Another method is to cut the potato into 1-inch thick cross sections then carve the entire cross section into the desired shape. Carve out some facial features or other details if you like.

Make wedges or even keep the trimmings for stamping smaller shapes and details.
Step 3 Potato Stamps3.Once you have made enough potato stamps, prepare different colors of paint on shallow containers. If you plan to stamp on fabric, use fabric paint, otherwise you can use regular poster paint or acrylic paint.
Step 4 Potato Stamps4.Dip a potato stamp in paint, making sure that the bottom is evenly-coated with paint.
Step 5 Potato Stamps5.Press the stamp firmly onto the paper or fabric.
Step 6a Potato Stamps6.Enjoy stamping using different colors of paint. Here are some fun and creative ideas that you can do:

a.) Make fun random shapes
  • This can be a simple yet fun activity for toddlers
  • Make a potato-stamped shirt or apron
Step 6b Potato Stampsb.) Stamp shapes to form a picture. Use potato wedges and trimmings to make smaller shapes and details.
Step 6c Potato Stampsc.) For oodles of fun, finger paint the details on your picture.

The water bubbles, fish eyes and fins in this underwater picture were all done by finger painting.

Pony Rides at Griffith Park

My favorite thing about the Griffith Park pony rides is that they have age appropriate ponies! I mean, if you are a big kid you can get a pony that trots you around an open raceway, and if you are, like, 3, you can go on the slow-walk-in-a-circle pony.  Because as much as 10 year olds might still like ponies, the walk in the circle gets old after a few years:)

All pony rides are only $3, and parking is free.  The ponies rest on Mondays.  This spot also has a really ghetto train ride around the grounds, which I hate but always have to go on with my kids.  They just love trains!

Here is the article from Red Tricycle:

SM_Farmers_Market_Pony-Rides
Griffith Park Pony RidesIf there’s one time-honored tradition LA is known for (besides Bikram knitting classes), it’s the Griffith Park pony rides. Little cowpokes ages 1 and up can choose from a variety of different rides depending on their comfort level. From a gentle pony sweep where you ride in a circle, slow ponies with an easy walking pace, medium ponies with a trot to big ponies that do more of a fast jog Richard Simmons style (minus the 80′s style spandex), there’s something for everyone. All rides are only $3 (cash only) and are available every day but Monday from 10:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Check out a new park - Beeman Park Studio City

Beeman Park is one of my favorite valley parks because it is shady and breezy. It also has 2 playground areas, one for small and one for bigger kids. I also like the basketball court and hand ball wall right next to the park.

Another great thing about this park is that it is super close to the Studio City Library. If you feel like a trip to the park is not enough to get you out of the house you can spend a little time in each:) Just make sure you check the library hours because it is closed some mornings.
I can't attach the links on my phone so you're going to have to Google for more info:)

Nature Valley Catalina = Free Bars at Vons!

Check out this post from Southern California Saver.  Right now you can get super cheap granola bars at Vons, and even better you can get a catalina, which can be used as money off your next purchase of anything in the store.

With the in ad coupon or coupon loaded to your card you can get Nature Valley bars for only $1.49, limit 4.  Look through your Sunday coupons and you will find $.75 and $.50 coupons, depending on the type you buy.  That is already a great price.  But reports are coming in to SCS that you also get 2 $2 catalina coupons when you buy 4 boxes.  That is amazing!  So with $.50 coupons you spend $4 and get $4, with $.75 coupons you make a little extra.

Now that I have moved into the new house I will be focusing on stocking up my new pantry, so look forward to more grocery store posts in the coming months:)

All this for free at Rite Aid!

I had $18 in rewards from last week to use up before our trip to Canada this week, and used it to get all of this free!

Bought 4 Bic Cristal pens, 10 pack, sale price $.99, used 4 $1 coupons making them all free.

Bought 4 Bic Comfort razors, 4 pack, price $4.69 and $2.34 (buy one get one half price).  All 4 were $14.06, and I used 4 $3 coupons, or $12, so paid only $2.06 for all 4! Also, I got back $1 for each 2 I bought, so $2 total.

Bought one Venus razor, sale price with gold discount was $6.23. Used a $3 coupon from my Rite Aid receipt, and a $3 coupon from the paper making it only $.23.

Bought 2 Stayfree pads, sale price $3. Used $1 coupons, and got back $2 on each one.

Bought 2 Nutella, sale price $2.99 minus $1 coupons.

To fill out my order and get my total up to $18 and use rewards I also bought a Spiderman lunch box for $3.98, 50% off, and some juice boxes. I still didn't it $18 so I added in some cat food:)

I paid the tax and $3 for the cat food ( on sale 10/$5 and get $2 back). I got back $8 for another trip.  Too bad they expire on the day I get back! I can't see a late night Rite Aid trip after a 6 hour flight with 2 kids:) But I am sure someone can use them!

Jazz on the Lawn in Santa Monica

Summer is almost over!  I can't believe it.  It has been so crazy and busy and fun, but I am feeling kind of ready to relax and get ready for a new year of school.  Just a couple years until both kids will be in school at the same time, and then a few more and they'll be in the same place too!

This free Jazz on the Lawn series in Santa Monica sounds really great as summer winds down.  You can relax on the lawn, pack a picnic, and enjoy the sounds of a different jazz band every week while your kids play and snack.  Sign up some friends to join you so the kids can keep each other busy!  Music is 5-7 pm.  I think it has the potential to be a very relaxing night out with the whole family:)

Check the link to Red Tricycle for the details...

Free Gillette Shave Gel or Foam at Target! | | The Krazy Coupon Lady

Did you get the LA Times today?  If so you can use a coupon from this week at Target for 3 FREE shave gels.  Crazy!!!

The coupon is $6/3, and Target usually has these priced at below $2.  I haven't seen the coupon but the reports on KCL say there is no size restriction, so you can use this on trial size.  Some stores, like Walmart, allow for coupon overage, so at that store you can always select the cheapest item allowed by the coupon and use the leftover money toward another purchase.  If you have one close by give it a try!  Reports also say it is working on womens shave gels.  If it doesn't go through you can always cancel the purchase - I do it all the time when experimenting with coupons and different store policies!

So if you find them for $5.99 you can use a $4 coupon from the paper on 6/30, and pay only $1.99, plus they are triggering the extrabucks reward promotion so you get $5 back!

Sun shadow art project

We just moved, so I have been trying to think of crafts that don't require a lot of materials or clean up time. This project I discovered by accident one day, and was reminded of when my son did it as a project at school.

Construction paper fades very quickly in direct sun, so if you have ever left it out you have probably seen this in action. All you need to do is choose a dark or bright color piece of construction paper, and choose things that will create interesting shapes to lay on top. Leave the paper with the objects in the sun for a half hour or longer and the objects will leave a shadow as the paper fades around them. I used a lot of foam stickers but didn't stick them on the paper. They were flat and handy, so they made the cut:)

101 FREE Prints is Back at Shutterfly!!

Have you been uploading your pictures to shutterfly? The awesome 101 free prints promotion is back today and tomorrow. You can get 101 prints and pay only shipping! Remember, if you order under 100 prints your shipping is only $5, and if you do 101 it goes up to around $8.

Also remember to order extras for crafts to fill up your order. We just celebrated a birthday, so I am thinking birthday party picture collage!!

Use code 101PRINTS now through Sunday:)

Make you own book of games

This is a super easy idea, and can be really fun to save for a road trip or plane ride!

All you need is a book with plain paper, or binder, and some glue. You know how you always see mazes, matching games, and counting games on the back of cereal boxes, kids menus, and happy meals etc? Start saving them and put them in a book! Your kid will like the variety of the games and characters, and most that you made it:) You can pull it out on a rainy day or to earn a few minutes on a flight. I've got a long one coming up next week!! Going to have lots of movies on the tablet for that!!

CVS deals of the week

Isn't it crazy how many great deals come up every single week? I got.some more goodies for my stockpile this week, using lots of rewards and coupons.  Check it out:

Bought 4 Right Guard deodorant on sale 2/$6. Used $2 coupons on each one, so paid 2/$2, and got back $2 in rewards for each pair. So spent $4 and got back $4.

Colgate toothpaste was on sale for $2.99. I used a $2 CVS q for any toothpaste and a $1 Colgate q, so it was free.

Tone body wash was on sale 2/$7. I used a $2/2 CVS q and a 2/$2, so they were $3 for both and I got $2 back for buying 2.

Physicians Formula had a promotion if you spend $10 you get $7 back. I bought the mascara for $10.49, and uses my 20% coupon from the CVS machine. It cost $8.39 and I got $7.

Last I got a CVS q for $3 off any Revlon. The nail polish is on sale $4.99 each, and you get $3 back. I also had $2 manufacturer coupons for Revlon. So I bought 2 polish, cost $10, used $7 in coupons so paid $3, and got back $6. I could have just got one free but I like getting back more rewards than I spend! I also used a lot of rewards to pay, so my out of pocket was about $12, and I got back $19 in rewards!

Eye Extravaganza at Rite Aid

I had so much fun with the promotion on eye make up this week! The deal is you get $10 in rewards if you spend $30 on eye make up. Add in some coupons and sale prices and this was a sweet deal! I used a lot of rewards this week to get my out of pocket down to $5.35 before tax, but I also earned back $18 in rewards:)

First I bought the Venus razors, on sale for $7.99. I used a buy one get one free coupon, and also got back $2 for each pack, so $4 total.

Next I found Got 2 B hair spray on the clearance rack for $1.75, and I used a $2 coupon, so made $.25 there!

Bought 2 Scunci hair elastic 18 ct, $2.99 each and got back $2 each.

Last was the make up. Almay and Covergirl were on sale buy one get one half off. I got 2 covergirl eye shadow (not pictured, in my make up bag already!) for $3.39 and $1.69, used a $3/2 coupon. Bought 2 almay mascara, $7.49 and $3.74, and 2 almay pencils $7.69 and $3.84, used 2 $5/2 coupons. Last, got 4 wet n wild eye pencils for $.99 each, used 4 $1 coupons, so they were free.

I spent $30.60 on eye make up, but used $17 in coupons, and got the $10 back.

All told I used around $22 in rewards, spent $8.26 with tax, and got back $18. Yay:)

Shakespeare - Super Hero Style!!

This free weekend event combines something I love - Shakespeare - with something my kids love - Super Heros!!  How awesome is that?

The Actor's Gang in Culver City is performing Twelfth Night acted entirely by super heros.  Shows are Sat and Sun at 11am in Media Park.  And they do this every weekend in August.  I can't wait:)

Autry National Center Free Tuesdays!

I have driven by this museum countless times on my way to the zoo - it is directly across the street - but have never been inside.  I had a look at the website today, and they do have a free day once a month on the second Tuesday of the month.  I am for sure going to check it out.  I think my son will enjoy the Wild West stuff, and if not, we can always hop over to the zoo:)

The August free date is the 13th.

Baby and Pre-School Storytime at Los Angeles Public Libraries

Libraries are such a great source of free events!  And as a bonus you promote a love of reading and books just by going:)  If you are looking for something to get you and your baby or toddler out of the house look up your local library!  Most have a weekly storytime for a few different age groups, and for older kids most have summer reading programs.  I am looking forward to trying out this one, close to where we are staying for the next week, at the Rancho Palms branch.

Beverly Hills Farmer's Market - Picklefest!

Farmer's Markets are always fun, but doesn't Picklefest 2013 sound awesome?  The Beverly Hills market is one of my favorites because the street is out of the way, parking is in the adjacent lot and free, and there is almost always live music.  My kids also love the petting zoo and pony rides, which are happening every Sunday during August.  I think the petting zoo is about $3 and pony ride is $4.  The market goods seem pretty overpriced to me, so we usually stick to the petting zoo:)

This Sunday August 4th the market is hosting the 19th Annual Picklefest.  I have no idea what happens at Picklefest, but it sounds like a good time on a Sunday morning.

Getty Center Free Garden Concerts This Wekend

I was just thinking about the Getty Center, and wondering if I could manage it with 2 kids.  It is such a beautiful free spot, but I always worry that there isn't enough for kids my age to do once we get there!  Well, this month there are kids concerts Saturday and Sunday at 4pm.  Perfect!  Add in a stop to the Family Room, with some hands on activities and painting, and I think it could be sure bet.

There is no admission fee for the Center or concert, but there is a parking fee of $15, so take the minivan and carpool!!!

Here is the website link with info about the concerts:

The Hollywood Bowl is such a great space, but the concerts are all so late to bring the kids!  Luckily there is a SummerSounds Program with concerts and art projects for kids running everyday through August 16.  Tickets for the music concert are $7, and art project are $5 (age 3 and up only), but if you bring a group of 10 or more you can save $2 per ticket on each event.  It's not the cheapest event in town, but it is a pretty cool chance to get the kids out to experience a concert without staying out until midnight!

Check out the Police Museum!

My kids had a blast at this tiny, out of the way museum. We were the only ones there today, so they had the run of the place!

Kids under 12 are free, and adult admission is $8, which makes for a pretty affordable outing. Pack up some extra kids if you really want to get your money's worth:)

The museum was small, but big enough to hold the kid's interest.  The jail cells were cool, and the vehicles outside were great. Some cars even had bullet holes! My son liked climbing in the police helicopter, and my daughter, of course, found it terrifying.  She is at a not-so-adventurous age.
I would caution you that the second floor has a lot of guns on display, so if you don't want your kid knowing about or asking about guns you should avoid going upstairs. Also, the museum is not really well trafficked, and even with the map it is a bit hard to know where to go to avoid ending up in someone's office. But the people were super friendly and you could tell they would be happy to answer questions.

All in all an affordable and entertaining day, and a great way to start conversation about what the police do, what happens to criminals etc. When we were talking about the jail cells my son was listing the things you don't have in jail, like toys, and I told him that was because all you could do in jail was sit and think about what you did. Nice.  And I learned some new things too.

Here is the link to the website so you can figure out how to get there and hours etc.  Thanks to Red Tricycle for highlighting this museum last month!
